Scholarly interests: He is interested in motor control and motor learning including motor skill acquisition processes and how practice-related variables influence skill acquisition especially augmented feedback and different forms of information. Mainly he tackles the problem of the impact of verbal, visual, and kinaesthetic feedback on the efficiency of learning and perfecting of movement techniques from the preliminary to the stages of the qualified sports of the process, with a particular emphasis on swimming. To objectify research results he uses measurement devices that resorted to biomechanics and physiology sciences.
Szczepan is currently involved in numerous broad coverage investigations: effect of immediate verbal feedback on the teaching of swimming process; the influence of concurrent visual feedback on the energy cost of swimming; ability to differentiate the generated force among swimmers; evaluation of parameters of the velocity curve during short-term maximum effort semi-tethered swimming, effects of swimming with added respiratory dead space on cardiorespiratory fitness; analysis of kinematic and kinetic variables in different arm swing techniques of swim start; prediction of sport level in elite male motorcycle speedway riders: role of physical profile and experience.
Research experience: He has participated in numerous post-doctoral international exchanges dealing with the measurement of human performance, analysis of swimming technique, and assessment of health in leading academic units such as the Faculty of Sport, University of Porto, Portugal; Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Science, University of Granada, Spain; Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, University School of Physical Education in Wroclaw, Poland, Faculty of Sport Sciences, University of Rouen, France; Health and Human Performance Department, University of Wisconsin – River Falls, USA; Department of Physical Performance, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, Oslo, Norway; School of Pharmacy, Biotechnology and Sport Science, University of Bologna, Italy; School of Kinesiology, University of Michigan, USA; Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Program (BIG10, Division 1, NCAA) at the University of Michigan, USA; Sports & Technology Center, Chalmers University of Technology Göteborg, Sweden; Health and Human Performance Department, the Technical University of Madrid, Spain. During this period of research and advice, a lot of subjects including swimmers were tested and evaluated on different levels.
